Vervet monkeys are usually seasonally born between Sep-Mar which as it coincides with the wet season is also the time of year when we plan our releases of troops of monkeys. Orphaned baby vervet monkeys require care 24/7 and volunteers will spend hourly shifts with these orphans, feeding, cleaning their quarters, monitoring their health and playing with them. Be prepared to get pee'd and pooped on but when a little orphan curls up and falls asleep on you, all will be forgiven! Longer stay volunteers may become surrogate monkey parent which involves taking them to bed of a night time, feeding throughout the night and comforting them.
We have a sanctuary cage with very special monkeys who have suffered as a result of human activity and all volunteers will spend time cleaning, feeding and caring for the blind and partially sighted, the physically or mentally challenged.
Project work consists of gathering natural feed for all enclosures, refurbishment of enclosures, enrichment of enclosures, alien and invasive plant removal, fire breaks, food collections and food sorting
Volunteers work 6 days a week, on your off day you may visit local attractions (at own cost and subject to vehicle and driver availability) or just chill by the pool. We drive to town twice weekly for shopping and there is the opportunity for volunteers to accompany a staff member on these trips.
Veterinary students will be encouraged to shadow/join our medical team and may accompany staff members to the local vet surgery to assist monitoring of sick/injured monkeys

An amazing project with amazing staff
I work as a travel agent, bringing volunteers to DAKTARI and other projects around the world. After helping a lot of volunteers fulfill their dreams of coming to South Africa, I managed to arrange 2 weeks to spend at the project. What a wonderful time I had starting with the staff who are so friendly and polite, the animals being taken care of as if they were family and the amazing food that was prepared catering to each of the volunteers individual needs. I can only say that if you are looking for an unique and quality experience involving a well thought out educational program and the preservation of native animal species, this is the one for you.
