accommodation included, food included, cooking facilities, electricity, local shops, refillable drinking water, bucket shower, cold shower, drop toilet and wifi. We live in a real simple way in total harmony with nature.

Details of the day-to-day life on the project:

This is a unique experience in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Comoros are biodiversity and culturally unique. Comoros are a hotspot for marine mammals, maybe one of the best in the world with a great diversity of animals and great numbers. We are studying marine life in order to best advise community and government for the sustainable development of Comoros. We have discovered new species for the area and we are pushing more and more our limits of study to discover more. A life changing experience, working along some of the best marine mammals specialists. come and visit but be open to different cultures as you will be completely submerged in Comoros life.


Conservation :
Protect nesting site for marine turtles of Comoros.
Restoration of Mangroves and coastal zones.
Trees plantation against erosion and for lemurs feed.
Creation of observation charts for wild animals.
law making advices

Research:
Inventory of the C2 stock of humpback whales, acoustic and behavioural studies.
Inventory of dolphins populations
Inventory of nesting sea-turtles, feeding behaviour.
Mapping, Health check and composition of sea-grass meadows, mangroves and coral reefs.
Study of sea and terrestrial birds (identification, numbers evaluation, nesting grounds)
Study of lemurs population (numbering, social and feeding behaviour)
study of Livingston bats population (Roosting trees, numbering)

Education:
English courses to schools and community membres.
Sustainable Environment courses to villagers.
Caring for Comorian students and help them in creating projects within Comoros.

An amazing project with amazing staff

I work as a travel agent, bringing volunteers to DAKTARI and other projects around the world. After helping a lot of volunteers fulfill their dreams of coming to South Africa, I managed to arrange 2 weeks to spend at the project. What a wonderful time I had starting with the staff who are so friendly and polite, the animals being taken care of as if they were family and the amazing food that was prepared catering to each of the volunteers individual needs. I can only say that if you are looking for an unique and quality experience involving a well thought out educational program and the preservation of native animal species, this is the one for you.
