Project purpose:

This project will be a unique opportunity to take part in orangutan conservation while living and working in orangutan habitat. Previous projects have included construction of orangutan release sites and guard posts in protected areas, renovating a tropical forest research station and an information centre. All projects directly benefit orangutan conservation. All volunteers will visit Tanjung Puting National Park where there will be a chance to see both rehabilitated and wild orangutans.

When does the project run?

July and August

Facilities:

accommodation included, food included, bucket shower, drop toilet. A remote location, no mobile signal or wifi, 2 to3 hours by boat to nearest town and hospital.

How long can I stay?

3 week volunteer commitment only

Requirements:

  • Must be over 18 years old and fit and well

Details of the day-to-day life on the project:

Cost: £900 ($1170) - includes all meals, accommodation and local transport from arrival on the 22nd July to departure. Excludes international and internal flights. 
Places are strictly limited and are given on a first come first served basis, after an interview.

Note: There is no hands-on or direct contact with orangutans, this is for the benefit of the apes.

An amazing project with amazing staff

I work as a travel agent, bringing volunteers to DAKTARI and other projects around the world. After helping a lot of volunteers fulfill their dreams of coming to South Africa, I managed to arrange 2 weeks to spend at the project. What a wonderful time I had starting with the staff who are so friendly and polite, the animals being taken care of as if they were family and the amazing food that was prepared catering to each of the volunteers individual needs. I can only say that if you are looking for an unique and quality experience involving a well thought out educational program and the preservation of native animal species, this is the one for you.
