Project purpose:

We are running research sailing expeditions and cross the Mediterranean every season collaborating with NGOs, dive centres and marine researchers from all the areas. Keeping track of Seagrass health and extend of meadows, range for new invasive species and organize cleanups on beaches as well as below the surface with a focus on ghost nets in particular.

Facilities:

accommodation included, food included, electricity, refillable drinking water, cold shower, western toilet

All facilities from a European standard apartment are available at times. Life is on board a sailboat depending on the overnight location (anchor or Marina) you could have amenities of a large city.

How long can I stay?

minimum of 2 weeks ideally

Requirements:

  • Willingness to learn and work with the researchers to get the jobs done!

Details of the day-to-day life on the project:

Life on board is a close knit community. All cabins are doubles (so if you have a friend you would like to share this experience with it could be a good fit). Daily life can be very different depending on the leg you join on. We generally move 2-3 times a week and switch locations while working with various other organizations/shops on the way, giving possibilities to dive, snorkel, explore on land and under water.

An amazing project with amazing staff

I work as a travel agent, bringing volunteers to DAKTARI and other projects around the world. After helping a lot of volunteers fulfill their dreams of coming to South Africa, I managed to arrange 2 weeks to spend at the project. What a wonderful time I had starting with the staff who are so friendly and polite, the animals being taken care of as if they were family and the amazing food that was prepared catering to each of the volunteers individual needs. I can only say that if you are looking for an unique and quality experience involving a well thought out educational program and the preservation of native animal species, this is the one for you.
